Google Tag Manager: Common Issues
Running into trouble? Here's what comes up most often.
"I can't find the User Management option"
A couple of things to check:
- Are you an Admin? Only Admins can add users. If you don't see User Management under the Container column in the Admin section, you probably have a lower permission level. You'll need to ask whoever set up the GTM account to either add us directly or upgrade your access.
- Are you in the right place? Make sure you clicked Admin in the top navigation first, then look in the Container column (right side) for User Management.
"I'm not sure which container to give you access to"
If you have multiple containers, you want the one for your main website. The container name usually matches your website or company name. If you're not sure, let your GeekyTech account manager know and we'll help you figure it out.
Each container also has an ID that looks like GTM-XXXXXXX. If you can see that on your website or from your developer, we can match it up.
"I added the email but they can't see anything"
This usually means the permission level is too low. Double-check that you selected Publish under Container Permissions when you added the user. If you only granted Read access, we can see the container but can't make any changes.
To fix it:
- Go to Admin > User Management (Container column).
- Find team@geekytech.co.uk in the list.
- Click on it and update the Container Permission to Publish.
- Save.
"The email invitation wasn't received"
A few things to try:
- Check with us first. Sometimes it arrives and we've already accepted. Your GeekyTech account manager can confirm.
- Resend it. Go to Admin > User Management and check if the invite is showing as pending. You can resend from there.
- Verify the email. Make sure you typed team@geekytech.co.uk exactly, with no extra spaces.
"I'm signed in but I can't see my GTM account"
You're probably signed in with the wrong Google account. This happens a lot when people have a personal Gmail and a work Google account.
- Click your avatar in the top-right corner of GTM.
- Check which email is shown.
- If it's the wrong one, switch to the account that has access to your GTM.
"What's the difference between GTM and Google Analytics?"
They're different tools:
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Google Tag Manager | A container for managing tracking codes (tags) on your website. Think of it as the delivery system. |
| Google Analytics (GA4) | A reporting tool that collects and shows your website data. Think of it as where the data lives. |
We need access to both, but they're managed separately. The GTM guide is this page. For GA4, see the Google Analytics guide.
"I don't have Google Tag Manager"
If GTM hasn't been set up on your website yet, let your GeekyTech account manager know. We can help you get it installed. It's free and makes managing all your tracking much easier.
"Someone else manages my GTM"
If a developer or another agency manages your GTM:
- Ask them who has Admin access.
- Have that person add us using the steps on the main guide.
- If they're no longer available, you may need to recover access through Google. Let us know and we'll help.
"I want to remove access later"
No problem:
- Go to tagmanager.google.com and sign in.
- Click Admin > User Management (Container column).
- Find team@geekytech.co.uk.
- Click the three dots and select Remove.
